Leagues // Spotlight

Sup, freaks! An apology is in order for my absence the past few weeks. I won’t bore you, but the holidays and an unexpected job offer have made life a bit chaotic lately. Still, I feel bad for leaving you guys hanging. As a way of saying sorry, I present to you the first breakout band of 2013: Leagues.

Born out of the busily Nasville scene, Leagues supplies an irresistible indie-rock sound. While they don’t break down any barriers or tread into unfamiliar realms, the band still kicks out tunes that brings you in like a moth to a lightbulb. Seriously, I haven’t been this excited for a new band in several months. Be on the lookout for their debut album to drop later this month.

Cee-Roo // Memories

The remix. Most of the time, it’s a half-hearted effort to “enhance” an already perfect song that needs no attempt at a second try. In some cases however, a well-crafted remix can truly add an exciting spin that eventually leads to unflattering dancing around one’s apartment.

For Cee-Roo, an up-and-coming DJ out of Switzerland, the latter is true. Much like Pretty Lights, Cee-Roo has exceptional skills for integrating an EDM sound to existing tracks and samples. However, Cee-Roo seems to focus his efforts primarily on old classics. While it would be easy to tarnish such staples of music, Cee-Roo actually supplies a fresh breath of life into the tracks. In other words, he doesn’t devalue the originals, rather, he adds a new and interesting spin to some traditional favorites.

Branches // To The Desert

Queue the banjo. Bring on the ukelele. Flood those speakers with a sturdy drum beat and the rapid strumming of an acoustic guitar. Yes, once again I bring you another new Americana/folk-rock band.

LA group Branches describes themselves as “indie-folk-rock-family-fun” that draws comparisons to Mumford & Sons and Freelance Whales. Their debut album Thou Art The Dream came out earlier this year and is definitely worth adding to your collection.

If you’re not yet on the Thao bandwagon, it’s time to listen up. For the past few years, Thao, along with her band (The Get Down Stay Down) or friend Mirah, has graced fans with a steady stream of new music. Her unique voice tied with her boisterous folk-rock and alternative-rock styling’s results in some truly enjoyable compilations.

With word of yet another new album comes her new single Holy Roller. This blustery tune is filled with her usual pop hooks that will surly appease her followers and bring in plenty of new fans. The new album, The Common, is set to release in February.

Mystery Pills // Anti-Pattern

It’s been a while since a pure indie rock band has registered on my radar. I’m talking no frills, gimmicks, nor significant Americana/folk/electronic influence (think along the lines of Arcade Fire, The National, or Wolf Parade). Thankfully, Mystery Pills has come along to fill this void. This one-man band (Raj Dwason) from South Dakota creates a bursting sound by recording riffs and looping them through his keyboard. Combined with strong vocals, Mystery Pills display’s some serious skills and should easily be thrown into the mix of rising stars.
